Quelles furent leurs impressions face à ce chef d’œuvre ?

Let me talk about the incredible story of a lucky survivor of the sinking of the supposedly « ship of dreams » the RMS Titanic.

From 1820 to 1920 a lot of immigrants from Europe went to America to start a new life. In 1912 many British families chose to travel on the Titanic. Such was the case of Franky Goldsmith’s family. They were very poor and they lived in misery. When they saw an add for the Titanic, they thought that was a good opportunity to make a new living in America.

Indeed they saved money for a long time to take a liner to go to America, so the Titanic was the solution. The day of departure drew closer, so the little family of the little village of Strout, Kent in England, left to the port of Southampton.

When Franckie Goldsmith saw with his ten-years-old-eyes the huge ship, it must have been in awe because the Titanic must be ten times his house. Indeed, the Titanic was a luxurious ship because she had a promenade desk, electric elevators, a swimming pool, a Turkish bath, a gymnasium, a smoking room, a library, a grand staircase. Beside her nickname was « the ship of dreams ».

But Frankie and his family were 3rd class passengers so they didn’t have access to all of this facilities. Frnakie didn’t mind as his quaters looked so new and clean !

Before they boarded the Titanic, the 3rd class had to go through the health inspection to check for any disease. Afterwards, they discovered their cabin: it was very tiny and narrow, indeed there were only 2 bunk beds and a little sink and they had to share their living space with a strangers. Frankie had heard of the first class who had a large individual state room with a sofa, a desk, a private bathroom and a large bed for them alone ! How lucky they were.

The 3rd class was at the bottom of the ship just above the machine room. The 2nd classes bedrooms were above and the first class’s bedroom were on the top of the ship.

Once the 2200 passengers and the crew boarded, the Titanic left the port of Southampton to supposedly go to NYC. The liner left Europe rapidly because she had to cross the Atlantic Ocean in five and a half day and it was the last travel of the captain Edward John SMITH and so he would finish his carrier in beauty. Frankie really wanted to meet him ! He was like a celebrity.

15 min after the departure he went at the back of the liner when he saw the coastline of the England he was awazed. The trip was very nice and peaceful, up until the 4th night. They were sleeping but the alarm woke them up with a start. They left their bedroom and they saw many people ran in the corridors. They heard a rumour saying that they had hit an iceberg…

Well, when every passengers were up on deck, the radio-operateur sent the SOS but at that time the distress call used to be CQD, so no ship understood the call. The women and the child protocal stated saved young kids and female passengers so, a lot of men jumped into the freezing cold Atlantic Ocean. They had no choice but to die. Frankie was lucky enough to board a lifeboat. His mum jumped with her child but his dad died eventually, trying to climb the lifeboats. What a sight… Franky saw the supposed unsinkable ship of dreams sink for two hours.

With the lifeboat they met the Carpathia who rescued only 700 survivors. When they finally got to NYC Frankie was frightened and horrified. Eight years later, Frankie Goldsmith was 18 years old, he married in 1920 and he had 3 sons. Unfortunately he would remain traumatized by a ship and he never took the sea.

Eversince the dawn of time, Humankind has always looked for new horizons and new ways to climb the social ladder.

Back in 1620, it started onboard the Mayflower, many Europeans chose to leave their old country and start a new life in the «New World» which was full of opportunities. America was the Promised Land where you could rise from rags to riches. Some three centuries later, from 1820 to 1920, lots of immigrants from Europe went to America to start a new life. In 1912, some Brititsh families chose to travel on the Titanic.

The Hart family did precisely that. They boarded the Queen of the Oceans as 2nd Class passengers.

In fact, there was 3 different classes aboard the ship : the wealthiest was the 1st class, the poorest was the 3rd class and in between was the 2nd Class. The Hart family had a 2nd Class ticket, which means that although they had more faculties and bigger rooms than the 3rd Class, they didn’t have access to the most luxurious parts of the liner unlike the privileged 1st Class, a lot of them whom were Aristocrats. I can’t be certain but it wouldn’t surprise me if the Hart family felt a little intimidated in front of the ship, I can’t even begin to imagine how it must feel to just raise your head to see the top of the ship but it just keeps on going up. It was probably a brand new start for them, they were boarding the extremely talked about «Ship of Dreams» heading towards a better life, they would have never thought an unseen iceberg would be the reason of great sorrow.

The Titanic was regarded as the beauty of the 20th century, she was both huge and luxurious, not to mention, she was the safest ship ever built. Before her, no ship as gigantic as her has ever been built, even her twin sisters, the Britanic and the Olympic weren’t as big. I can only imagine how amazing it must have been to be lucky enough to board the liner even as a 3rd Class passenger. Boarding on the liner, seen as unsinkable and the safest must bring a sense of ease to the passengers especially the ones who never went on a cruise before.

The Hart family was composed of Ether, the mother of the family with her husband Benjamin and their young daughter of seven : Eva. Eva was just a young child when she boarded the ship, she was born at the beginning of the century, in 1905, next to Ilford, Essex. I think she was probably eccstatic about going on a cruise and crossing the sea, after all who wouldn’t be ? Yet I feel like she must have been nervous, being thousands of miles away from the place you know, right above the dark Atlantic ocean full of unknown things must’ve been stressfull. Thankfully, her parents were there to take care of her.

The family left the country to emigrate to Canada where they had a few relatives. The father was told a job was open for him as secretary for a woodworking company, an offer which he accepted gladly. He finally had the opportunity to gain more status and money than he could in England. He was given the chance to better provide for his family in America and he was feeling incredible. All they had to do was get to New york and head to Canada to meet their relatives.

The Titanic had a famous nickname : «The Unsinkable ship of Dreams», since she was supposedly unsinkable and so luxurious. Indeed the ship had many facilities ; there were electric elevators, a swimming pool, a gymnasium, a library and many other things you wouldn’t even imagine could be on a boat. However, the bigger part of the facilities was only to be accessed by the 1st Class. People were praising the ship and called her many things, although they didn’t know that just four days later, the dreams of around 1500 passengers would be lost in the cold ocean waters.

The Titanic was Irish because she was built in the port of Belfast, the only trip the Titanic did completly was from Belfast to Southampton. The steam boat left Southampton on April 10th 1942 with 2200 passengers and crew onboard, including Eva and her family, to join New york.

On April 14th, just 4 days after the departure, at 11:40 p.m., the supposedly «Unsinkable ship of Dreams» hit an iceberg and began to fill with water. The ship, who everyone thought was invincible was actively sinking and she was sinking fast, the water was rushing into the boat, people were panicking, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume that some were stuck in their rooms, the pressure of the water locking them in their rooms, Eva and her parents were on the deck with many other people, all classes together. The crew was calling out for children and ladies, it must have been heartbreaking but Eva and her mother had to get into a lifeboat without her father. Children were crying, Eva was, children separated from their fathers and some of both their parents. Everyone knew what they thought was impossible was happening, everyone was rushing, a few were falling, it probably seemed like Hell on Earth. A luxurious cruise ended in the worst case scenario.

Unfortunately, the father, Benjamin Hart, died during the tragedy. Eva, survived along with her mother, thanks to the « Children and Ladies first Protocole ». They got to safety on a lifeboat and were then saved by the Carpathia, the only ship who understood the Titanic’s signal, sadly too late. 700 survivors were brought on board the Carpathia out of 2200 people originally on the Titanic. At least 1500 people died that night, grief could be felt all around Europe and America, families of the deceased were grieving, most bodies would never be retrieved from the Atlantic.

She may have lost all her belongings but life had to go on, she grieved with her mother and Canadian relatives, she was only 7 when she was seperated from her father. She stayed in Canada with her mother, it must have been hard for Ether. She lost her husband and everything along with him, but she still had her daughter. Eva went on to live another 84 years. She died decades later at the end of the century in 1996, she was 91 years old. She eventually moved back to England and lived in London for a few years. She passed away, peacefuly in her sleep.

The movie about the Titanic directed by James Cameron had not been released yet.

Well, first, let me tell to you about the story of a very lucky survivor of the tragedy of the RMS Titanic. He’s name was Frankie Goldsmith. When he boarded the Titanic, with his parents, he was just a child of 10 years old. Frankie and his parents were from the small town of Strout in Kent, in England. They decided to leave England to find a new life in the « New world » in America. The USA represented a wide array of opportunities, for such a family.

They commuted to Southampton; it was not an easy ride and the roads were quite busy. When they arrived in front of the Titanic, on chilly morning of April 10th they were so exited to board because the Titanic was a very luxurious and famous ship and contrary to their old make shift abode, the Titanic had new facilities they never see like electrics elevators, a swimming pool, a Turkish bath, a gymnasium, a smoking room, a library, a grand staicase and much more ! Frankie was so in awe.

When they boarded, they discovered their cabin that was quite tiny. But it was not important because the Titanic was a very luxurious ship and they were very fortunate to be aboard. Immediately they dropped off their luggage in their cabin, and went to the deck to see the beautiful view. Frankie was taken aback. Water till the horizon !

Every thing went well until that fateful night of April 14th 1912 at 11:40 pm… Unfortunately, the so-called «unsinkable ship of dreams», the «Queen of the oceans» crashed into an iceberg… In only 2 hours, the Titanic was under the Atlantic Ocean. Thanks to of the «Ladies and children first» protocol, the crew could save 700 passengers. The rest of the crew and the passengers sank deeply with the Titanic. Unfortunately, the father of Frankie died in the trajedy and only his mum survived with him. Frankie could not believe it… His beloved dad, gone with the Titanic.

After this terrible event, Frankie eventually got married in 1920 and had 3 sons. Despite this happy events, he would wake up at night, dreaming of the crash of the Titanic. It was a traumatic experience he would never forget. Frankie died in 1982, at 80 years old.

Let us write about the incredible life story of a lucky survivor of the sinking of the supposedly unsinkable “ship of dreams”, the Titanic : Frankie Goldsmith.

First of all, from 1820 to 1920, lots of immigrants from Europe went to America to start a new life. In 1912, some British families chose to travel on the Titanic.

So Frankie Goldsmith was born on December 19th in 1902 in Strout in Kent and he died in 1982, we think he probably died in America because of his journey. He was only 10 years old when he boarded as a 3rd class passenger with his parents, Frank Goldsmith and Emily Alice Brown onboard the Titanic because they thought that living in America would help them to begin a new life. In fact it was one of the main reasons why of many people wanted to live in America. It was the promised land where you could rise from rags to riches.

So when the luxurious steamboat started to steam to the promised land, New York City, on April 10th, the wealthy, the middle class and the poor went to their respective rooms. We guess Frankie’s family was amazed by the boat because there were all they needed onboard, beds, enough food, water and maybe other things, even if they slept in small cabins as 3rd class passengers.

The journey took 4 days before a tragedy happened, the “unsinkable ship of dreams” hit an iceberg on the Atlantic Ocean on April 14th at 11:40 pm just because the captain didn’t listen to the other ship’s crew icebergs warning. On top of that, instead of using the distress signal “CQD” to be rescued they used the distress signal “SOS” that was less popular back then so nobody came. Fortunately, a boat named the Carpathia understood the warnings but she was too far away to come in time.

Moving on to Frankie Goldsmith’s Family again, so to have a chance to survive they did the “Ladies and children first” protocol and of course it was the wealthy who were the first one to go in the 20 lifeboats. Besides, she sank into the Atlantic Ocean on April 15th at 18 minutes after midnight. It’s unfortunate because she was almost there, very close to arrive in America.

For 2200 passengers there were only 700 survivors including Frankie and his mother but his father died, we suppose it’s because of the protocol they did, maybe he could have survived if they were more lifeboats and if they didn’t use this protocol. It must have been horrible for him to see a member of his family die and actually try to survive. So when the rescuing ship arrived, the Titanic was already deep into the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The survivors were on the lifeboats but because of the cold waters and the clothes they wore who weren’t adapted for the cold temperature and some of them were already dead on the lifeboats.

In fact when the Carpathia rescued and brought Frankie, his mother and the 698 other passengers, some journalists probably interviewed them a lot. We imagine it wasn’t easy for them to talk about it because of their loss and that they probably didn’t expect their travel would turn into a nightmare.

In 1620, the British set sail onboard the now famous Mayflower to have a new life in the «new world », that would soon become the USA. Three centurys laters, Europeans were still driven by the same desire.

Indeed, from 1820 to 1920, lots of immigrants from Europe went to America to start a new life. In 1912, some British family chose to travel on the Titanic. Frankie Goldsmith was born on December 19th 1902. He left Strout in Kent in England, to go to Southampton with his parents, Frank Goldsmith and Emily Alice Brown.

The Titanic’s nickname was « the unsinkable ship of dreams » as she was so luxurious that it was like a dream for them. When they arrived in front of the Titanic, Frankie thought she was so huge and so luxurious. They were impressed. The landscape was wonderful yet, there were so, many people cheering them. It felt like infinity. When they boarded, they walked to the 3rd class quaters. So, the cabins were the most humble and the less luxurious part of the ship. Frankie did not mind at all. It looked so brand new and so clean ! Indeed, they boarded the Titanic to have a better life. Like their ancestors before them, the Titanic was a new Mayflower, taking them to the Land of the Free.

This ship was a state opf the art ship : there were many water tight compartments so the ship could not sink. They were along the rail of the ship. Of course, should the ship sink, it wouldn’t be very convenient for Frankie and his family, as their room was located just above the water line. Should the boat sink, they would die first. Despite this, onboard the Titanic, in case of extreme emergency, there was the « Ladies and childrens first » protocol.

On a peaceful night, they were sailing to New York. Unfortunately, after her departure, she hit on iceberg on April 14th at 11h40 pm. And sank on April 15th at 00h18. Just before arriving to New York. There were only twenty lifboats onboard for 2900 people. When the passengers saw the iceberg coming they were so scared ! Some didn’t see it coming ! And they were so surprised and confused when she hit it.

However, some passagers got very anxious and violent and others started screaming and crying and praying for their lives. Indeed the water was freezing cold and if they didn’t die from the cold, they could drown. Frankie though, managed to quickly board a lifeboast with his mother. The worst part was that unfortunatly, they were so close of New york when they sank in the Atlantic Ocean.

Today, we will tell you about Eva Hart who was a 2nd class passenger and who miraculously survived the sinking of the Titanic.

The Titanic departed from Southampton on April 10th 1912 with 2,200 passengers and crew on board. The ship was a big deal back in the days because she was very luxurious and she earned various nicknames such as : The unsinkabe and The ship of dreams.

Her first stop was at Queenstown in Ireland and then she traveled westwards to New York.

For a bit of history, from 1820 to 1920, lots of immigrants from Europe went to America to start a new life. In 1912, some British families chose to travel on the Titanic.

Anyways, back to the Titanic and Eva Hart, the Titanic had various facilities such as four electric elevators, a swimming-pool, a gymnasium, a Turkish bath and libraries. It must have been amazing !
Eva Hart was an English little girl of middle class born in Essex who lived in Ilford. I guess she lived in an average-sized house fit for a middle class family. She was born in 1905, from Ether and Benjamin Hart ; the family boarded the Titanic to emigrate to Canada and start a new life. But then, just four days after her departure, the Titanic’s lookout Frederick Fleet rang the ship’s bell three times at 11.40pm to alert the deck and shouted « Iceberg, sir, right ahead » but it was too late and she unfortunately crashed into the iceberg.

Radio operators telegraphed nearby ships for help « CQD-SOS from MGY. We have struck an iceberg, sinking fast, come to our assistance. » Officers lowered the lifeboats while shouting « Women and children first! ». There were only 20 lifeboats because the owner refused to add an extra row of lifebopats on the promenade deck since it wouldn’t have been « aesthetically pleasing » for the 1st class passengers. Anyways, some boats didn’t even leave with 60 people, but only twelve.

On April 15th, 18 minutes after midnight, the Titanic sank into the deep, cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Eva and her mother quickly boarded a lifeboat and got rescued but sadly her father wasn’t as lucky and died in the tragedy. The Carpathia arrived too late to save all the passengers. She only rescued 700 people out of the 2,200. As a result , around 1,500 people sadly got crushed or drowned to death.

Eva Hart went on with her life and answered questions to the press until 1996 when she passed.

Back in the 17th century, people left England to the « the new world » because life was too expensive and people were starving. For example, 101 puritains boarded the Mayflower and left from Plymouth in 1620 to settle in Virginia. Immigration has often been considered the key to all problems. Indeed 3 centuries later, things did not change so much, as people still chose the USA for « a better life ». The USA were the promised land where you could rise from rags to riches.

As a matter of facts from 1820 to 1920, lots of immigrants from Europe went to America to start a new life. In 1912, some British families chose to travel on the Titanic.

Well, let me tell you all about the story of Eva Hart.
Born in 1905 at Illford, in essex, she is one of the lucky survivors of the Titanic’s tragedy. Indeed she boarded THE « Queen of the oceans » with both her father Benjamin, and her mother Edith. So, this is on April 10th 1912 that her story began onboard the sadly known « ship of dreams » who was supposed to take the happy family to NYC. She left Southampton with 2200 passengers on her board, separated into three classes : first-class, 2nd-class and 3rd-class.

Besides, Eva and her family were accomodated in the 2nd-class section of the liner. I am assuming that she must have been deeply amazed by the gigantic size of the liner, as I guess that it must have been her first time abord such a luxurious ship. After all, she ll but 7 yo. The family actually set sail to America to emigrate afterwards to Canada. I may be wrong but I suppose they didn’t have enough money to keep on living in England. As I said earlier, the US represented a new array of opportunities for the family.

Moving to the tragic accident. On April 14th at 11:40pm the Titanic hit an iceberg.
Indeed, she crashed into an iceberg the crew unfortunaltely saw too late. The iceberg bumped alobng the rail and pierced several watertight compartements, which doomed the passengers in a matter of seconds. The rest is History.

It must have been horrible for her to see and feel all the panic on board. On top of that, there were only 20 lifetboats and some boats didn’t leave with 60 people aboard – as initially planned – but only twelve. The crew was clearly unprepared. Besides, at that time the wealthiest passengers were more protected than the middle class let alone the poor, especially women and children. Because of that, Benjamin Hart, Eva’s father sadly died in the crash ; but thanks to the « Ladies & children first » protocol, Eva and her mother survived.

Even if the crew sent an SOS to nearby boats to be rescued, the Carpathia arrived too late. She only rescued 700 people out of the 2200. Finally, the supposed « unsinkable » steamboat sank at 12:18 at the bottom of the Atalntic ocean.

Now, Eva has passed away, but despite her tragic story, she kept doing interviews to tell her story. She will remain in History as one of the lucky survivors of the Titanic.
